Bryson City – The Lady Devils snapped their 4 game losing streak Tuesday by taking a 13-12 9-inning win over Rosman. For most of the season Swain has suffered from big innings from their opponents. Rosman tallied some big innings, but this time the Lady Devils answered back. On four separate occasions the Tigers took the lead and looked to have Swain put away, but each time the Lady Devils answered the call and came back. Finally taking the win in the bottom of the ninth as Gabby Jones hit a short fly ball to left that Rosman couldn’t make a play on. Jones’ fly scored Bryar Buchanan from third with the game winner.
Rosman grabbed the lead in the first inning with a run. Swain answered in the bottom of the second when Callyn Brown reached on an error. Alyssa Haymond came on to run for Brown. Tori Treadway singled to advance Haymond to second. Haymond would score when Kyndle Jones singled.
Rosman then scored 4 runs in the top of the third to take a 5-1 lead. But Swain answered in the bottom of the inning. Erin Jenkins reached on an error, and Bryar Buchanan followed with a single. Freshman Kenzie Eagleman stroked her first career home run to straight away centerfield to pull Swain back to within 1 at 4-3.
In the fourth Eagleman would deliver again for the Devils. Buchanan tripled to deep right field. One pitch later Eagleman hit a deep fly ball to score Buchanan and tie the game at 5.
Swain took the lead in the 5th inning. Gabby Jones and Callyn Brown opened the frame with singles. Jones and Alyssa Haymond, who was running for Brown, swiped third and second with a stolen base. Jones would score on a ground out by Kyndle Jones. Ashton Younce reached on an error to score Haymond from third, giving Swain an 8-5 lead.
Rosman answered back in the top of the sixth as the plated four runs to take an 9-8 lead.
But, unlike their first four games, the Lady Devils answered back in the bottom of the sixth and tie the game. Bryar Buchanan and Kenzie Eagleman opened the inning with singles. Alicia Green grounded into a force play as the Tigers got Buchanan out at third. A pitch later Eagleman and Green moved up a base. Gabby Jones hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Eagleman from third and tie the game at 9.
Neither team scored in the 7th forcing extra innings. Rosman tallied two runs in the top of the 8th to move ahead 11-9.
Once again the Lady Devils answered.
Erin Jenkins opened the inning with a single. Bryar Buchanan lined out to right field. Kenzie Eagleman singled and Alicia Green walked to load the bases. Gabby Jones singled to score Jenkins. Eagleman scored the tying run when Callyn Brown grounded to third and Eagleman beat the throw home.
Rosman tallied a run in the top of the ninth to go ahead 12-11.
Again the Lady Devils answered in their half of the frame.
Kyndle Jones coaxed a walk to open the bottom of the 9th, and was followed by Ashton Younce who reached on a fielders choice. Erin Jenkins promptly singled to load the bases with no outs. Rosman then got Swain’s hottest two hitters, Bryar Buchanan and Kenzie Eagleman to ground in to fielder’s choices, each time cutting down the potential Swain run at the plate. Alicia Green grounded to third, but the Tigers were unable to make a play, allowing Jenkins to score and tie the game at 12. Gabby Jones then hit a short fly ball to left, which the Tigers were unable to make a play on allowing Buchanan to score the game winning run.
Taylor Day picked up the win in the circle. Day threw all 9 innings, 193 pitches worth, striking out 9 and surrendering only 2 earned runs on the day.
