BRYSON CITY – The Maroon Devils advanced to the NCHSAA 1AA Western Finals for the 3rd straight year. Friday the Devils downed Starmount (10-4) by the score of 49-14. With the win Swain will travel to West Montgomery next Friday to play for the right to go to the State 1AA Championship.
It was a banner night for the Devils, who roared out to an early lead and never looked back. Swain racked up nearly 500 yards of total offense while limiting Starmount to under 200. Swain’s backfield tandom of Blake Wright and Spencer McCoy each rushed for over 100 yards. McCoy finished with 171 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Wright had 169 yards and 3 touchdowns. With his effort Wright joined McCoy as he went over 1000 yards for the season.
Quarterback Raymius Smith added to his impressive resume. Smith hit Jordan Cody for a 49 yard touchdown pass midway through the 2nd quarter. The 49 yards pushed Smith over the 6000 yard mark for his career. Smith would finish with 124 yards on 8 of 9 passing and 2 touchdowns. Dakota Brown caught a Smith pass for the other passing touchdown.
Spencer McCoy paced the Maroon Devils defense with 10 tackles. McCoy and the first defense limited Starmount to under 100 yards before turning things over to the reserves in the 4th quarter.
Nelson Pinto made good on all 7 extra points on the night, giving him 48 made extra points on the season. His perfect night moved him into 6th place on the all time list of extra points made in a season.
The Maroon Devils (12-2) will now travel to West Montgomery for their 3rd straight trip to the Western Regional finals. It will mark the first time that Devils have hit the road for the Western Finals during the 3 year stretch.
