BRYSON CITY – Swain used a 42 point first half to cruise to a 56-31 win over East Wilkes in the 1st round of the NCHSAA 1AA playoffs. The Maroon Devils scored 14 points before many of the small crowd of less than a 1000 had settled into their seats.
Junior Spencer McCoy ran 29 yards on one of his only two carries of the game, for the Devils first touchdown. Nelson Pinto made good on the first of what would be 7 extra points for the senior kicker.
Jordan Cody then scooped up a short East Wilkes punt and raced 20 yards for the Devils second score, giving the Devils a 14-0 lead with 8 minutes still remaining in the 1st quarter.
Raymius Smith capped off the 1st quarter scoring with the first of 2 touchdown passes. The first covered 57 yards to Kobe Toineeta giving the Devils a 21-0 1st quarter lead.
In the 2nd quarter Taylor Oros and Blake Wright scored on touchdown runs of 22 and 4 yards respectively. Then Smith wrapped up the 1st half scoring with a 31 yard toss to Jordan Cody to give Swain a commanding 42-12 halftime advantage.
Blake Wright scored his 2nd touchdown of the night in the 3rd quarter with a 3 yard run. Trent Wright wrapped up the Swain scoring on a 4 yard run just moments later. Cooper Reinert added the point after for the Devils.
Blake Wright finished with a game high 150 yards on 17 carries and 2 touchdowns.
Raymius Smith finished with 203 yards on 8 of 11 passing.
Swain will advance to play Avery County this week in the 2nd round of the NCHSAA 1AA playoffs, kickoff is set for 7:30.
