Special to the Maroon Devils Network – Swain High Men’s Soccer Team hosted Invest Collegiate Imagine on Monday. Invest Collegiate Imagine is a Charter School from the Asheville area. Just six minutes into the game Junior Landon Matz would help the Devils get on the scoreboard off a pass from Senior Gavin Lanning. Six minutes later Matz would steal the ball and score once more. Just two minutes after that Sophomore Owen Craig would find the back of the net assisted by Junior Matthew Gray. 22 minutes into the game Lanning would once more connect with Matz giving Matz a hat trick on the night. With 16 minutes left in the first half scoring would be finished off with Lanning connecting with Senior Defender Taligwo Walker for his first goal of the season. The Devils would take a 5-0 lead into the half.
In the second half, just two minutes in, Gray would score the first Devil goal of the half off a pass from Matz. Two minutes later Gray would make a long throw leading to a goal by Senior Defender Levi Trantham. Three minutes later Senior Defender Lucas Trantham would add to the scoring off a pass from Craig. With 23 minutes left in the game, the Devils would obtain the 9-0 Mercy Rule when Junior Goalkeeper Cameron Phillips would score off a pass from Walker.
“Overall we played a good game. We had some good ball movement and were able to get all our players on the field.” said Head Coach Scott Cline. On Defense Lucas Trantham led the way with 6 Clears/Steals, followed by Junior Cameron Phillips and Freshman Jamie Owle each with 2. The Player of the Game was Junior Landon Matz. “Landon played a good game offensively.” said Cline. “He got us started early in the scoring and made some good passes.”
The Devils Tuesday game against Mitchell was cancelled. Their next game is a home game on Thursday against the Asheville Trailblazers at 6:00. This game was originally scheduled to be away. Next week they travel to Mitchell on Monday and to East Henderson on Wednesday for games.
