Cashiers (Special to the MDN) – The Lady Devils Soccer Team traveled to Cashiers on Thursday evening to take on the Blue Ridge Early College. The game was a battle of the defenses as it was a struggle for either team to get on the scoreboard. Twelve minutes into the first half Junior Janet Villagomez would score her first goal of the season off a pass from Junior Emily Ulaner. That would be the only goal scored in the first half. In the second half, with 21 minutes left in the game, Freshman Anna Gray would convert a penalty kick into a goal. The game would finish with the Lady Devils taking the 2-0 win. “The girls knew that they were going to have to step up their game due to missing some players.” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “Overall the girls played a great game. They really stepped it up.”
On defense Senior Kate Poss led the way with 20 Clears/Steals. She was followed by Junior Jade Henry and Sophomore Elke Reinert each with 6. In goal, Senior Maddie Lay had 11 Saves. The Player of the Game for the Devils was Senior Kate Poss. “Kate played a great game and made some great recovery runs.” said Cline. The next game for the Lady Devils will be Wednesday, when they host Blue Ridge at 6:00. On Thursday, the Lady Devils will travel to undefeated Highlands. Currently the Lady Devils (4-2) have won their last four games and are tied with Murphy for second place in the conference.
