Hiwassee Dam pushed across 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th to take a hard fought 3-2 win over the Lady Devils on Tuesday. The loss ended the season for Swain and advanced Hiwassee to the third round of the playoffs where they will square of with Hayesville.
Swain got on the board first in the top of the first. Junior Kendra Kirkland hit an 2 strike pitch out to straight away centerfield. Kirkland’s 10th home run of the season staked the Devils to an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third freshman Haley Shope hit a solo home run to tie the game at 1.
Swain responded in the top of the fourth as Kirkland roped a double to left center, then advanced to third on Nikki Cody’s ground out. Kirkland would score on a Maggie Sutton ground out to put Swain back on top.
Hiwassee pushed across two runs in the bottom of the 4th and then made those stand up over the remainder of the game to take the win.
Brianna Stepp scattered just 5 hits struck out 5 and walked none in the Devils loss.
Swain ends the season with an 11-8 overall record. Seniors Abbe Kirby, Madrid Segala, Jessica Winchester, and Nikki Cody played in their final game for the Lady Devils.
