Franklin – The Maroon Devils snapped a 6 game losing streak to Franklin with a 27-0 shutout win on Friday. Swain last shutout Franklin in the 2000 season, with a 17-0 shutout. Swain’s last win in the series came in 2012 with a 42-7 win, at home, over the Panthers.
The two teams exchanged initial possessions. Swain methodically drove 42 yards in 12 running plays, but stalled out on the Panther 5 yard line. The Devils missed a field goal that would have given them the lead.
Swain’s defense forced the Panthers into a 3 and out on the ensuing Franklin drive. Franklin’s punt set the Devils up with great field position on the Franklin 27 yard line. Swain used 6 running plays to get on the scoreboard first. Damian Lossiah bulled his way in from 4 yards out to put Swain on the board. Gavin Lanning nailed the point after to put the Devils up 7-0.
Following the Devils kickoff Franklin was once again held to 3 plays before having to punt the ball back to the Devils. The kick gave Swain the ball on the Panther 43 yard line.
It would take the Devils only one play to score. Quarterback Damian Lossiah hit Connor Hyatt in stride down the Panther sideline for a 43 yard touchdown pass. Once again Lanning made good on the point after leaving Swain with a 14-0 lead which they would carry to halftime.
Swain received the second half kickoff and promptly went to work. The Maroon Devils marched 65 yards in only 6 plays. Bryce Sain scored on an 8 yard run. The extra point failed leaving Swain with a 20-0 lead.
The Maroon Devils would score again on their last possession of the 3rd quarter. It only took 5 plays for the Devils to cover 68 yards. Damian Lossiah ripped off runs of 20 and 10 yards to open the drive. Carson Taylor broke free for a gain of 23 on the 3rd play of the drive. Bryce Sain got in on the action next, scampering 13 yards down to the Panther 2 yard line. From their Carson Taylor covered the final 2 yards for the Devils final score. Lanning made good on the extra point to put Swain up 27-0.
Swain’s defense, which was stellar all night, limiting the Panthers to only 145 yards of total offense, including only 98 yards rushing. Colby Taylor and Gaige Jones each came away with an interception. Ian Brooks was in on 12 tackles while Jake Langston and Thomas Allen both came away with 8.
On the offensive end the Maroon Devils had 278 yards of total offense, including 235 yards on the ground. Bryce Sain topped all rushers with a game high 119 yards on 13 carries. It marks Sain’s third 100 yard rushing effort out of four games. Damian Lossiah added 63 yards on 9 carries, while Carson Taylor had 38 yards on 6 carries. Connor Hyatt had one catch that went for 43 yards and a score.
