Special to the Maroon Devils Network – The Lady Devils soccer team hosted the Hayesville Yellow Jackets on Thursday night. The scoring started 6 minutes into the game when Freshman Kaylee Simmons dribbled the ball in and scored from 12 feet out. Three minutes later Freshman Avery Maples would find Senior Kyndall Cochran for her first goal of the night. 13 minutes later Cochran would find the back of the net off a pass from Sophomore Isabelle Green. In the second half Cochran would score twice more. One off a Penalty Kick and the second off a pass by Green. The Lady Devils would go on to win 5-0.
On defense, Sophomores Kate Poss and Bri Ross would each lead the way with 32 steals/clears each, followed by Junior Peyton Hines and Freshman Jadyn Perez with 24 each and Junior Rebecca Duncan with 14. “Overall the girls played a good game.” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “We tried a few new things in this game and the girls really embraced them.”
The player of the game for the Lady Devils was Senior Kyndall Cochran. “Kyndall really stepped it up offensively keeping the pressure on the Yellow Jacket defense.” said Cline.
The Lady Devils improve to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in the Smoky Mountain Conference. Currently Cochran sits at 2nd in the state with 25 goals scored at the 1A level. Green is 1st in the state with 16 assists on the season. As of Thursday, Swain was ranked number 13th in the state at the 1A level.
Swain will host Mitchell this Friday at 4:30 in non-conference action. On Monday they will travel to Tri-County Early College and on Thursday they will travel to Blue Ridge.
