Special to the Maroon Devils Network – The Swain Maroon Devils Women’s soccer team traveled to Pisgah once again last night to take on the Lady Bears. The Lady Devils were scheduled to play at home, but due to the heavy rain the game was moved to Pisgah on their turf field. Pisgah came into the game undefeated winning four games in a row. Swain was looking to avenge their only loss of the season one week ago to the Lady Bears. The speed of the Bears was just a bit to much for the Lady Devils. Pisgah scored their first goal fairly early when the Lady Devils defense got caught on their heels and allowed a through pass to get through the defense. Pisgah’s next goal came off a free kick right outside the box that was sent over the Devils keeper’s head. The Lady Bears would score one more time just before halftime. They would go on to score one more time off a free quick from right outside the box in the second half making the score 4-0 Pisgah.
“Overall it was a tough game for us as we just were not connecting at many different places on the field.” Said Head Coach Scott Cline. “Pisgah definitely has a good team that made it difficult for us to make those connections.”
On the Defensive side of the ball the Lady Devils were led by Sophomore Bri Ross with 38 Steals/Clears. Sophomore Kate Poss had 25, Senior Jessie Richards had 17 and Junior Rebecca Duncan ended with 14. In Goal Sophomore Maddie Lay had 9 Saves. Swain will travel to Murphy on Thursday for a very important conference game.
The Swain Player of the Game was Junior Rebecca Duncan. “Over the past week Rebecca has really stepped up her game.” said Cline. “She has gone from someone that mainly clears the ball out to someone that settles the ball and then advances the ball down the sideline.”
