Special to the Maroon Devils Network from Swain Soccer – The Swain Maroon Devils Women’s soccer team traveled to Pisgah on Monday to take on the Lady Bears. Two early goals by Pisgah proved to be the deciding factor. Pisgah jumped on the board early after scoring a goal over the Swain keepers head just 4:45 into the game. Pisgah took a corner kick at the 8:45 mark and Pisgah finished off the kick with a goal from the backside of the goal box.
The next 71 minutes of the game would be a showing of strong defenses for both teams with neither team scoring. “Pisgah has a good team with some very talented players. We just had some mental mistakes out there that we should not have had.” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “We will learn from them and move on. Games like this will only help us as we get closer to playing our first conference game on Thursday.”
On the Defensive side of the ball the Lady Devils were led by Sophomore Kate Poss with 24 Steals/Clears. Sophomore Bri Ross with 22, Junior Rebecca Duncan with 10, and Senior Jessie Richards with 8. In Goal Sophomore Maddie Lay had 16 Saves. Swain will host Pisgah next Monday. The Lady Devils play two home games this week. They host Tallulah Falls on Tuesday night at 6 and open conference play on Thursday night against Blue Ridge at 6.
The Swain Player of the Game was Freshman Kaylee Simmons. “We had a lot of girls that really stepped it up. Kaylee was put in a position on the field that she normally doesn’t play due to some injuries.” said Cline. “Overall her aggressiveness and physical play inside played a big role for the team.”
