Cherryville – Swain won their first 2 wrestling matches of the NCHSAA Team Duals on Wednesday. To say that the Team Duals have been an adventure would be an understatement. Scheduled for Tuesday, the Maroon Devils headed out to Cherryville only to turn around and come back after the first round was postponed to yesterday. So, Swain boarded a Boy’s Club bus and headed to Cherryville yesterday.
The Maroon Devils now find themselves in an even odder position, after winning both matches, Swain woke up this morning as the host for the next round of the Team Duals.
Swain downed East Surry in the first match at Cherryville by the score of 50-30. With that win they advanced to face host Cherryville, who they beat 70-12.
Athletic Director Neil Blankenship found out the Devils would host the next round late Wednesday night. 3rd round matches will get underway at 6 o’clock, with Regional Championships starting at 7:30. This is a unique opportunity for Swain and the Smoky Mountain Conference, who have long argued they should get to host a Team Dual playoff event, but have been relegated to traveling in each of the last 5 years, regardless of their seeding.
