Marshall – The Swain Maroon Devils soccer team opened up their season with a trip to 2A Madison County Patriots on Monday night. The Devils went up 1-0 just 5 minutes into the game off a goal from Senior Trey Bowman who was assisted by Junior Jonas Trejo. Just 40 seconds later Madison County answered with a goal of their own. One minute later Madison County pulled ahead 2-1. With 21 minutes left in the first half Bowman found the back of the net again off a pass from Trejo. The Devils and Patriots went in to the half tied 2-2. The Devils jumped back ahead 14 minutes into the second half off a goal from Junior Nathan Brock with Bowman getting the assist. Swain would hold on for the 3-2 win. “Overall it was a good start to the season for the team. We definitely have things to work on, but we had some players that really stepped up,” said Coach Scott Cline.
On defense Junior Aiden Pond led the way with 10 clears/steals, followed by Freshman Travis Franklin with 8, and Senior Joey King with 7. In goal, Sophomore Noel Wolf recorded 12 saves. The Swain Player of the Game was Senior Trey Bowman. “We had many players that really stood out in this game. Trey really stepped up on the offensive end.” said Cline. “Overall it was a really good performance by all of the Swain soccer players.”
