Hiwassee Dam – Monday the Lady Devils and Hiwassee Dam engaged in an old fashion pitchers dual. Both teams were scoreless through the first 5 innings, before Hiwassee Dam broke through with a pair of runs, but Swain rallied back to tie the game in the top of the 7th. In the bottom of the 7th, Hiwassee Dam’s pitcher Kaylee Cornelius broke the Lady Devils hearts with a walk off solo home run to end the game 3-2.
In what has become typical Lady Devil fashion, Swain got off the deck, after surrendering two runs in the bottom of the 6th. It was Kendall Bowers who started the rally with an infield single. Bowers advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch, and then stole third, and scampered home on the errant throw. Bowers run cut the Hiwassee Dam lead to 2-1.
One batter later sophomore Kenzie Eagleman belted her 4th home run of the season with a solo shot to right centerfield. Eagleman’s home run tied the game at 2 and set the stage for Cornelius’ heroics.
Swain had 5 hits on the day, one each from Grace Cabe, Kenzie Eagleman, Shayne Catolster, Alissa Smith and Kendall Bowers. On 3 separate occasions Swain loaded the bases and were not able to score, stranding 11 runners on the day. Swain also had 6 walks to go along with 12 strike outs.
Stacey Griggs was outstanding in the circle for Swain. The freshman gave up only 2 hits on the day, although both proved costley. She struck out 5, while walking 6. Griggs got solid defense from her teammates, including three outstanding plays by third baseman Alissa Smith.
