Pisgah – The 2017-18 athletic season has barely begun, but it is off to a good start for Swain and the Lady Devils. Swain opened their season by taking a close fought 3-2 nonconference win over Pisgah. It also marked the first win of the varsity coaching tenure of first year head coach Kayla McMahan. Swain fell in the first set 22-25, but rebounded by taking the second set 25-19. Pisgah took the 3rd set 19-25. The Lady Devils took sets 4 and 5 by the scores of 27-25 and 15-12 to take the win.
Despite being the first game of the season it was an impressive showing for the Lady Devils, who basically refused to lose. Swain continually played balls that most teams would have given up on. Their early season hard work at the service line paid huge dividends Monday as the Lady Devils made good on 99% of their serves as a team. Swain finished with 12 aces as a team, sophomore setter Ashton Younce led the way with 4.
At the net senior middle hitter Grace Cabe led the way with a team high 11 kills. Cabe also added 6 solo blocks, while Taylor Collins added 3. Brette Pattillo did much of the back row work collecting 23 digs on the night.
Swain returns home for their home opener this evening against Franklin. JV action will get underway at 5 with varsity to follow.
