Swain first debuted gray as part of their uniform in 1977, when Coach Boyce Deitz’ first team wore gray pants as their primary pant. Deitz’ logic was simple in that the gray pants were easier to clean than the white, on top of that the University of Georgia was the rage at the time with their gray pants. Gray pants have remained an option for the Devils ever since. Coach Rod White, appropriate given his surname, brought back white pants during his tenure as head coach.
The combination of white jersey and gray pants has long been considered good luck. Swain sported that combination when they won their first State Championship in 1979.
Now the Devils have 3 sets that they can mix and match, so be on the look out for great combinations of the maroon, gray, and white.
Considering how superstitious most coaches and teams are, it may be the first and last time we see the solid gray uniform this season, given the Devils lost the home opener 10-0 to Smoky Mountain.
