Bryson City –
Swain County High School has named a successor to long time volleyball coach Sonya Blankenship, who stepped down after 19 seasons. The search did not have to go far, as the Maroon Devils tabbed Blankenship’s longtime assistant Janet Shuler as their new head volleyball coach.
Coach Shuler has been an assistant coach for the last 14 years at Swain, where she has also served as head junior varsity coach. She is a graduate of Western Carolina University and has worked with Swain County Schools since 2002. Shuler played volleyball at Swain from 1995 to 1998, under Blankenship.
“I am very honored to have been chosen to continue the traditions of Swain County High volleyball. I have been blessed to be a part of this program as a player and a coach and I am excited to be a part of the future. I would like to thank Coach Blankenship and Coach Walker for all their help and support, but more importantly for their friendship. I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead in continuing a successful program.”
