Every have one of those days? You know the ones I am talking about, where pretty much everything that can go wrong does. Well the Maroon Devils experienced that, and in essence stepped into the Twilight Zone, in Saturday’s State 1AA Championship game.
The favored Devils suffered through 5 costly turnovers and lost the time of possession battle. Swain’s defense also had a hard time sticking with tackles, as the Southwest Stallion runners, ran hard all day.
Southwest, who was opportunistic, used the Devils miscues and their own strong rushing attack to build a 37-13 lead just before the end of the third quarter.
The Maroon Devils refused to give up, scoring the next 21 points to cut the lead to 37-34 with just over a minute left to play in regulation.
Swain’s onside kick bounced off a Southwest player, with the Devils unable to recover the deflected ball, the Stallions DaMonta Winbush scooped up the ball and raced 42 yards for the final touchdown of the day, leaving the final score at 44-34.
