Bryson City – There is a long and rich history when it comes to Smoky Mountain Conference volleyball. Almost every bit of it involves Swain and Rosman. The two bitter rivals got together Tuesday for yet another classic in their long line of meetings. Both teams entered the contest with 5-1 records and were unbeaten in conference play. When the dust settled Swain took a hard fought and well played match 3-2, by the scores of 25-16, 20-25, 25-20, 23-25, and 15-13.
For Swain the key to the win came from a surprising source – their student body. Swain’s student section was loud and involved from the beginning to the end of the 2 hour match, something that has not always been the case. But on this night they along with the volleyball team were #MaroonStrong.
Swain relied heavily on their seniors, as they will all season. Adrianna Kaylor, Lydia Sale, Alyssa Robinson, Emily Styles, Taylor Shuler, and Karie Jones all had their moments. Juniors Autumn Brown and Faith Long, along with sophomore Maggie Burns all had solid contributions. In summary, it was a total team effort, just the way the Lady Devils want it.
The two teams will meet at least one more time at Rosman later in the season, but in all likelyhood they could see each other three more times before the season ends. If Thursday was any indication, those will be matches you don’t want to miss.
