Raymius Smith and Greg Tisho’s outstanding efforts in Satruday’s State Championship game resulted in both of them setting new State Championship records. Since moving to neutral sites records have been kept for performances in State Championship games.
Smith, threw for 426 yards in the Devils loss. His 426 yards breaks the old mark of 359 set by Chris Leak of Independence. Leak was 25-44 for 359 yards and 3 touchdowns in the 2000 State Championship game. Smith finished 22 of 35 with 2 touchdowns.
Other noteworthy quarterback performances include Heath Shuler in 1990 and Brad Roach in 2001. Shuler threw for 275 yards on 14 of 20 passing with 4 touchdowns in the 1990 title game in Kenan Stadium. Roach, quarterbacked Williamston against Swain in the 2001 title game played in Kenan Stadium. Roach finished with 304 yards and 6 interceptions.
TIsho tied the record of receptions in a State Championship game with 13, set by Jerome Simpson of Reidsville in 2003. Tisho’s 261 receiving yards sets a new mark, eclipsing the old one of 225 set by Brad Hinton of Independence in the 2000 championship at Kenan Stadium. Hinton, Tisho, and Hakeem Nicks (Independence) are the only receivers to ever go over 200 yards in a State Championship game.
