The grandest high school football stage of all has become reserved for a few final records for the 2012 Maroon Devil football team. When the season began no one could have guessed that Swain would shatter the offensive record books, but that is pretty much where we stand heading into the State Championship. There are only a couple more within reach, but they are pretty noteworthy.
After last Friday’s game with Monroe senior Matthew Maennle put his name on a few more receiving records by tying Jeff Hurley’s single season mark for catches in a season, as well as Georgie Kerber’s WNC record for touchdown catches in a season.
Maennle now has 62 catches on the season with 22 touchdowns. So he needs one catch on Satuday to become the single season record holder at SCHS for catches in a season, and I am sure he wouldn’t mind if that one catch were for a touchdown, so he could get the other mark as well.
A little more off the radar, but perhaps more impressive, signal caller Raymius Smith now needs 3 touchdown passes to tie Heath Shuler’s single season record for TD passes in a season. Smith stands with 39 after last Friday, and is just shy of Shuler’s 42.
