Swain signal caller Raymius Smith is closing on a feat that most at Swain High thought would never be touched. When Heath Shuler stood under center for the Maroon Devils every record he set, which is every passing record for season and career, most thought would never be broken.
Now 14 games into the 2012 season, Smith is only 5 touchdown passes shy of Shuler’s school record of 42. Considering tonight’s opponent it is unlikely that Smith will toss 5 touchdown passes, which means that the Devils will have to win for him to have a chance at Shuler’s mark.
Even if Smith comes up short, and even if he doesn’t throw another touchdown the rest of the season, his season has been nothing short of remarkable. The next closest to Smith is Danny Muse who had 20. That is how special what Smith has done this year is, to even be talking about his numbers in comparison to Shuler is extraordinary.
Smith’s completion percentage has shattered the old marks at SCHS, so far he is completing 64% of his passes. He is 121 of 189 for 2270 yards. His completions, yards and touchdowns are second only to Shuler at Swain High.
Here’s hoping Raymius gets tonight, and a State Championship game for a chance to break Shuler’s record.
