The Lady Devils soccer team would open up the first round of the NCHSAA playoffs hosting North Rowan. It would take the Lady Devils 10 minutes to get on the scoreboard. Junior Emmie Fuller would find Senior Cora Watkins on the run. Watkins would take a shot from just outside the 18, scoring over the goalkeeper’s head. Six minutes later Sophomore Karena Cline would send the ball ahead to Sophomore Mya Burrows-Kurr who would dribble in and pass the ball into the corner of the goal. Thirty seconds later Sophomore Izzy Walker would pass the ball up the sideline to Burrows-Kurr who would dribble in for another goal. With 19 minutes left in the half Senior Kathryn Roland would get the ball to Burrows-Kurr who would add her third goal of the night. With 8 minutes left in the half Walker would get a ball that rebounded off a Rowan defender and shoot it into the back of the net. Two minutes later Burrows-Kurr received a ball from Sophomore Sophie Matz and scored from the right side of the field. The half would finish with the Lady Devils up 6-0.
Just 30 seconds into the second half the Lady Devils would add their seventh goal when Cline would find Watkins for the goal. Eight minutes later Cline would bury a shot in the left upper 90 off a drop pass from Burrows-Kurr. Almost halfway through the second half, Burrows-Kurr would finish off the 9-0 mercy rule win, with her last goal of the night and Cline getting the assist on the goal. “The girls did a great job throughout the game of moving the ball around the field. They found the open passes and were able to advance the ball really well.” said Head Coach Scott Cline.
The defense was led by Sophomore Rose Carson with 7 Clears/Steals. She was followed by Junior Anna Gray and Junior Emmie Fuller each with 3. In goal Sophomore Gracie Sutton had two goalkeeper saves. The Player of the Game was Sophomore Mya Burrows-Kurr. “Mya really stepped up her game tonight. She was much more aggressive than she has been the last few games and was definitely a difference maker for us tonight,” said Cline.
Mya Burrows-Kurr is currently number 1 in the Smoky Mountain Conference in goals scored with 25 and Karena Cline is number 1 in the conference and number 1 at the 1A level in the State in assists with 29. The Lady Devils next game will either be on Wednesday or Thursday night at home against Cornerstone Charter School out of Greensboro, NC. Cornerstone is coming off a 9-0 first round win also.
