Franklin – Traditionally the Swain and Franklin football games have always had a flavor of old fashioned football. Hard hitting and solid play is usually on the game plan for both programs, who share a deep respect for each other. This past Friday’s latest chapter followed the script to the letter, and added a thrilling finish for the fans in attendance.
The Devils jumped on top in the first half of what would be a stingy defensive contest. Swain advanced into the red zone twice and had nothing to show for it, before Reece Winchester found Josh Collins for a 27 yard touchdown pass. Brendan Lanning knocked home the extra point to give Swain a 7-0 lead with 9:39 left in the second quarter.
Franklin opened the second half with an 8 play 70 yard drive that ended with a touchdown. Brayden Watts scored on a 10 yard run. The extra point tied the game at 7 with 9:02 left in the third quarter.
The score would remain 7-7 throughout the remainder of regulation, forcing overtime. Franklin took the ball in the first overtime. The Maroon Devil defense stopped the Panthers and forced them into a short field goal, giving Franklin a 10-7 lead.
Swain responded on their possession. On the very first play QB Reece Winchester optioned to his right and took it in from 10 yards out to give the Devils the win at 13-10.
On the night the Devils outgained the Panthers 199 to 138. The Swain defense held the Panthers to under 100 yards rushing with 88 yards.
Josh Collins finished with a game high 69 yards on 19 carries. Reece Winchester rushed for 38 yards and threw for another 63 yards on 4 of 6 passing. Nathan Bogdonawicz had a pair of catches for 29 yards, while Josh Collins and Austin Jenkins had a catch each.
