The Lady Devils soccer team hosted the Blue Ridge Bobcats on Monday night in the last conference game of the regular season. With a win the Lady Devils would secure a share of the Smoky Mountain Conference Championship. Nine minutes into the game Freshman Karena Cline would find Junior Cora Watkins for a goal. With 22 minutes left in the half Freshman Mya Burrows-Kurr would steal the ball from a Blue Ridge throw in and take a shot converting it into a goal. Eight minutes later the Bobcats would get on the scoreboard. The first half would end with the Lady Devils up 2-1.
Six minutes into the second half Burrows-Kurr would find Cline for a goal. With 9 minutes left in the game Senior Mazie Helpman would take the ball from a Bobcat defender and score the final goal of the game. The Lady Devils would take the 4-1 win. “The girls knew the importance of the game and really dug deep to pull through for the win.” said Head Coach Scott Cline.
Defensively Sophomore Anna Gray led the way with 11 Clears/Steals. She was followed by Freshman Sophie Matz with 6, and Senior Jade Henry with 5. In goal Freshman Gracie Sutton recorded 7 goalkeeper saves. The player of the game for the Lady Devils was Junior Elke Reinert. “Elke really kicked it in and played a big role in securing the win for us. She was aggressive and helped us slow Blue Ridge down,” said Coach Cline.
