Special to the MDN – The Lady Devils soccer team traveled to Asheville on Monday to take on the 3A Erwin Warriors. Just 6 minutes into the game Freshman Karena Cline would find Senior Kaylee Simmons for her first goal of the night. Just 20 seconds later Senior Mazie Helpman would receive a long ball from Senior Avery Maples, beat a few defenders, and score on the Warriors goalkeeper. Eight minutes later Senior Jadyn Perez would find Simmons with a pass for a goal. Just a couple of minutes later Helpman would take the ball from a Warriors throw in and dribble in and score. With 8 minutes left in the first half, Sophomore Anna Gray would take a free kick from 40 yards out, sending it right past the Warriors goalkeeper putting the Lady Devils up 5-0 at the half.
Nineteen minutes into the second half Simmons would steal the ball off a Warriors goal kick and find the back of the net, giving her a hat trick for the night. With 7 minutes left in the game Junior Savannah Currie would take the ball from a Warriors defender and score from 20 yards out. The game would finish up with the Lady Devils taking the 7-0 win. “The girls played a very unselfish game and moved the ball around really well.” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “It was great seeing how well the girls played together.”
Defensively Sophomore Anna Gray and Freshman Karena Cline led the way with 5 Steals/Clears each, followed by Seniors Jadyn Perez and Avery Maples each with 3. In the game, Freshman Gracie Sutton recorded 2 goalkeeper saves and Sophomore Emmie Fuller had 1 save.
The Player of the Game for the Lady Devils was Senior Mazie Helpman. “Mazie played a great overall game. She played well on both the defensive and offensive side.” said Coach Cline. The Lady Devils open up conference play on Thursday as they take on the defending conference champion Highlands at 6:00 at Highlands.
