Bryson City – For one of the rare occasions, perhaps the first time in school history, the Maroon Devils hosted the Western Regional Championship of the NCHSAA State 1A Dual Team Championships. The wrestling playoffs form a unique playoff experience as the 4 bracketed teams come together at one location and wrestle a 4 team single elimination tournament of sorts. Wednesday Swain was fortunate to host the final four teams in the Western end of the state.
At the end of the night Avery punched their ticket to another NCHSAA Team Dual Championship. The Vikings made surprisingly short work of Robbinsville, in what was to have been the biggest match of the season. Avery jumped out to a commanding 41-7 lead before forfeiting the final matches to take a 41-31 win over the Knights.
Our Maroon Devils fell in the first round of the night to Robbinsville. The Black Knights defeated the Devils by the score of 51-27.
