Kernersville – The Lady Devil Cross Country Team made history this past Saturday. Swain won their first ever women’s Cross Country State Championship. The Lady Devils scored 89 points to outdistance the 16 team field and win the title. Thomas Jefferson Classical was second with 101 points, Avery County third with 132 points and Gray Stone Day fourth with 137 points.
Freshman Arizona Blankenship won the individual title (see separate article) with a time of 19:06.19. Amaya Hicks and Gracie Monteith put the Lady Devils a leg up on the other teams as the duo finished 14th and 15th overall. Hicks and Monteith actually got 12 and 13 points, due to individual runners, who were not on the 16 teams competing, finishing ahead of them. Emily Ulaner scored 24 points by finishing 29th overall. Then Laiken Harvey became the hero of the day for Swain, as Harvey finished 52nd but scoring 39 points. Lauryn Linton and Lilly Bjerkness rounded out the Swain runners.
