The Lady Devils soccer team hosted Tri-County on Thursday night for Senior Night. Before the game the six Seniors were recognized for their contribution to the soccer program. The Seniors are Cora Watkins, Elke Reinert, Kathryn Roland, Mahala Bird, Savannah Currie, and Tsini McCoy. Thirteen minutes into the first half Sophomore Mya Burrows-Kurr would find Sophomore Karena Cline for the first goal of the game. Twenty seconds later Burrows-Kurr would find Senior Cora Watkins for a goal. With 20 minutes left in the first half Senior Kathryn Roland would find Senior Tsini McCoy for a goal. Two minutes later McCoy would add her second goal off a pass from Cline. The half would end with the Lady Devils up 4-0.
Four minutes into the second half Cline would find Watkins for another goal. Twelve minutes later Cline and Watkins would connect again giving Watkins her first ever hat trick. Six minutes later McCoy would find Roland for the Lady Devils seventh goal of the night. With three minutes left in the game Junior Abbey Frost would receive a goal kick from the Blue Ridge goalkeeper and send it right back into the goal. With two minutes left in the game Sophomore Lilah Foster would cap off the scoring off a pass from Sophomore Rose Carson. The Lady Devils would take the 9-0 mercy rule win. “It was great to see the whole team do a great job of moving the ball around the field. It was also great to see all the Seniors play,” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “The Seniors accounted for six of our nine goals in the game.”
The Defense was led by Junior Anna Gray with 7 Clears/Steals. She was followed by Sophomore Rose Carson with 4, and Junior Audrey Zelenka and Freshman Audrey Monteith each with 2. In goal, Sophomore Gracie Sutton had a shutout in the first half and Sophomore Mya Burrows-Kurr and Junior Audrey Zelenka shared in the shutout in the second half. The Player of the Game for the Lady Devils was Cora Watkins. “Cora did a great job of moving the ball down the field. She not only scored goals, but she also did a great job of getting the ball to her teammates.” said Cline.
The Lady Devils remain in first place in the Smoky Mountain Conference with a 10-0 conference record and a 12-3-1 overall record. The Lady Devils next game is Friday night with Highlands at Highlands at 7:00. Highlands remains one game behind the Devils in the conference standings.
