Cherokee – The Maroon Devils ran away from the competition in taking their second straight SMC Track and Field Championship. Swain finished with 205 points easily outdistancing second place Cherokee who finished with 121. Hayesville was third with 104 just ahead of Robbinsville who had 100.
In the sprint portion of the running events it was Swain’s Josiah Glaspie who took home 2 first place finishes and a second. Glaspie finished 2nd in the 100 meter dash, but brought home gold in both the 200 meter dash and 400 meter dash. Keyanthae Graham took 2nd in the 200 meters, while James Arch was among the top finishers in the 400 meter.
The Maroon Devils continued their strong showing in the distance events as well. Connor Brown took home first in both the 800 meter and 1600 meter, while Carl Baird was 3rd in the 3200 meter. Kane Brown turned in a 3rd place finish in the 800 meter.
Austin Jenkins finished 2nd in both the 110 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles.
In the field events Matthew Gray took top honors in the pole vault and triple jump, then finished 2nd in the long jump. Owen Craig nabbed 2nd in the pole vault. Nse Uffort took home the gold in the discus and finished 2nd in the shot put.
Swain took first place finishes in the relay events. Take first in the 4×400 relay was Josiah Glaspie, Josh Collins, Kane Jones and Connor Brown. Jones and Brown combined with Connor Lambert and Abi Patel to take first in the 4×800 relay.
