Cherokee – The Lady Devil Track and Field team won their 3rd straight SMC Championship on Wednesday by over 100 points. Second place Hayesville finished with 125 points to the Lady Devils 231. Robbinsville was third with 93 followed closely by Murphy with 90.5.
Swain took points by volume in the speed events. Naomi Feagin (2nd) in the 100 meter dash, Marlee Hicks (3rd) in the 200 meter dash and Cora Watkins (3rd) in the 400 meter dash all finishing on the medal stand and earning valuable points.
It was more of the same in the hurdle events. Amelia Rogers and Kinsley Hyatt finished 2nd and 4th in the 100 meter hurdles. In the 300 hurdles it was Melani Linton (2nd), Mya Burrows-Kurr (3rd) and Kinsley Hyatt (4th) for the Devils.
The distance events is where the Lady Devils really shined and pulled away from the rest of the schools. Swain took 1st, 3rd and 4th in both the 800 meter and 1600 meter. Arizona Blankenship won both events as well as taking first in the 3200 meter. Annie Lewis and Amaya Hicks took 3rd and 4th in both the 800 and 1600 meter runs. In the 3200 Annie Lewis finished 2nd while Gracie Monteith was 4th.
Swain also took first place finishes in the 4×400 and 4×800 relays. In the 4×400 it was Amaya Hicks, Audrey Monteith, Cora Watkins and Mya Burrows-Kurr taking the gold. Arizona Blankenship, Amaya Hicks, Gracie Monteith and Annie Lewis took the gold in the 4×800.
