Lady Devils Blank Jackets

April 18, 2023 by Toby Burrell

The Lady Devils soccer team hosted the Hayesville Yellow Jackets on Monday night. It was a night of a lot of scoring. Just 5 and a half minutes into the game Sophomore Mya Burrows-Kurr would find Senior Cora Watkins for a goal. Two minutes later Burrows-Kurr would find Senior Kathryn Roland for a goal. Two minutes after that Sophomore Isabella Walker would control a ball that would rebound off the goalkeeper and bury it in the back of the net. One minute later Sophomore Karena Cline would find Burrows-Kurr for a goal. Four minutes after that Watkins would find Cline for a goal. With 22 minutes left in the half Cline would find Sophomore Sophie Matz for a goal. The Lady Devils would conclude their scoring in the first half at the 22 minute mark when Junior Kennedy Cooper would find Senior Savannah Currie for a goal. The Lady Devils would go in at halftime with the 7-0 lead.

In the second half Cline would find Burrows-Kurr for a goal with 28 minutes left in the half. Four minutes later Freshman Audrey Monteith would find Cline for the final goal of the game giving the Lady Devils the Mercy Rule win over the Yellow Jackets. “We played a solid game. Coming off of Spring Break we didn’t know what to expect.” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “Our warmups were not where we wanted to be, but the girls really pulled it together for the game.”

The Defense had four girls tied with the most Clears/Steals with 3. Those players were Juniors Emmie Fuller, Anna Gray, JC Parsons and Sophomore Sophie Matz. In goal, Sophomore Gracie Sutton played for 20 minutes and had no goals scored on her and Junior Anna Gray played the rest of the time and had two goalkeeper saves. The Player of the Game for the Lady Devils was Karena Cline. “Karena did a great job controlling the middle of the field and distributing the ball,” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “She was often the one to get the ball to where we needed it so others could get an assist or a goal.”

The Lady Devils next game will be on Friday at home at 6:00 against 3A Smoky Mountain High School.
