Bryson City – The rain began right about time for the first pitch in Tuesday’s SMC matchup between Swain and Hayesville. A steady light rain drenched the first three innings before stopping and giving way to sunshine. Hayesville got off to a hot start scoring runs in the first and second innings to build a 4-0 lead. But the Lady Devils bats came to life in the bottom of the second as they plated 6 runs to take the lead. Swain would add on 7 more runs in a productive fifth inning before finishing the game with a single run in the sixth to take a 14-4 win.
In the second Kennedy Anthony got things started for the Devils as she doubled off the left centerfield fence. Kandyce Crisp walked and then Haileigh Woodard reached on an error to load the bases. Hannah Shuler grounded into a fielders choice that would score Anthony from third for Swain’s first run of the game. After Woodard and Shuler advanced to third and second on a wild pitch, Kiersten Smith singled home Woodard. Kaley Parker coaxed a walk to load the bases again for the Devils. Carley Teesateskie roped a double to left field scoring Shuler and Smith to tie the game at 4 each. Mollie Woodard came on to run for Teesateskie. Parker scampered home on a wild pitch to give Swain the lead. Maddie Spates hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Woodard from third and complete Swain’s six run inning.
Maddie Spates opened the decisive sixth inning with a single up the middle. Rylee Rawls followed with her first career home run. Two outs later Haileigh Woodard singled and Hannah Shuler followed with a walk. Kiersten Smith reached on an error to load the bases. A pitch later Woodard scored on a wild pitch. Kaley Parker singled to bring home Shuler. Carley Teesateskie followed with her first career home run, a three run shot to centerfield.
Kennedy Anthony, who started the scoring, would end it in the sixth. Anthony, who drew a walk and advanced to third on a Kandyce Crisp single, would score on a ground out by Haileigh Woodard to end the game 14-4.
Senior Maddie Spates went 3-3 on the day scoring once and driving in a run. Carley Teesateskie was 2-4 with a home run and 5 rbi, while Rylee Rawls had a home run and 2 rbi. Kaley Parker went 2-3 and scored twice, while Kandyce Crisp was 2-3. Kiersten Smith, Haileigh Woodard and Hannah Shuler each scored a pair of runs in the win.
Rylee Rawls worked a complete game from the circle scattering 10 hits, walking none and striking out 7.
