The Lady Devils soccer team would host the Highlands Highlanders on Monday night in a key Smoky Mountain Conference matchup. It would be a battle between the only two teams that remained undefeated in conference play and the two teams who were co-conference champions last year. The Lady Devils would get on the scoreboard first when Junior Anna Gray would send a ball through the Highlander defense finding Sophomore Mya Burrows-Kurr for a goal. The first half would end with the Devils up 1-0.
Twenty minutes into the second half Burrows-Kurr would take a corner kick curving it into the goal putting the Devils up 2-0. With 13 minutes left in the game, the Highlanders would score their first and only goal in the game. The game would end with the Lady Devils taking the 2-1 win. “The girls came out ready to play with good energy for the full 80 minutes,” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “We spent a lot of time on the attacking half and just need to work on converting that time into some goals.”
The Defense was led by Junior Anna Gray with 6 clears/steals. She was followed by Senior Elke Reinert with 3, and Sophomore Rose Carson and Junior Emmie Fuller each with 1. In goal, Sophomore Gracie Sutton would record 5 goalkeeper saves. The Player of the Game for the Devils was Junior Emmie Fuller. “Emmie really stepped it up in the middle of the field applying pressure quickly to the Highlands midfielders,” said Cline.
The Lady Devils next game will be at home on Thursday at 6 in another Smoky Mountain Conference matchup. They will take on the Cherokee Braves.
