The Lady Devils soccer team would have their home opener on Tuesday night hosting the 2A Brevard Blue Devils. The Blue Devils would come into the game with a 4-1 record and ranked number 6 in the Western part of the state at the 2A level. For the first 30 minutes of the game neither team could find the back of the net. With nine and a half minutes left in the first half Brevard would score their first goal of the game. Just two minutes later Brevard would add their second goal of the game. With three minutes left in the half Sophomore Karena Cline would take the corner kick with Senior Cora Watkins getting a body on the ball and finishing it for a goal. The rest of the game would see neither the Maroon or Blue Devils scoring a goal. The game would finish with Brevard taking the 2-1 win.
“We knew going into the game that Brevard would be a tough team. They have only played 2A and 3A schools this season before us.” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “We definitely played them tough and had some opportunities that we just did not convert into goals.”
The Defense was led by Sophomore Sophie Matz with 9 clears/steals. She was followed by Junior Anna Gray with 6, Sophomore Rose Carson with 3 and Senior Elke Reinert with 2. In goal, Sophomore Gracie Sutton would record 7 goalkeeper saves. The Player of the Game for the Maroon Devils was Sophomore Sophie Matz. “Sophie did a great job as one of our Center Backs which is a different position than she has played this season so far,” said Cline. The Lady Devils next game will be an away conference game at Blue Ridge on Thursday at 4:30 in Cashiers.
