Bryson City – The Maroon Devils pulled off a stunning upset Thursday of first place Robbinsville. It was a game that featured just about everything. Swain jumped out to an early lead only to see it evaporate in the second half before holding off a furious rally down the stretch to record the 71-67 win.
Swain ran out to a 30-8 lead to open the game and maintained the lead until the 7 minute mark in the 4th quarter when the Knights tied the game at 56. From this point on the lead went back and forth as the two teams put on quiet a show for the fans in attendance. The Devils opened the 4th quarter with all five starters having 4 fouls. They would lose Josiah Glaspie just 7 seconds into the 4th quarter due to fouls. But the Devils showed a lot of grit and were able to hang on down the stretch to take the win.
Swain had four players in double figures and were lead by senior Riley Winchester. Winchester would finish with 16 points to go along with 4 assists. Josh Collins had 14 points, while Glaspie and Reece Winchester finished with 10 each. Nathan Bogdanowicz had a team high 10 rebounds, while Aiden Southards added 8 rebounds.
