The Swain High Men’s Soccer team traveled to Hayesville to take on the Yellow Jackets. It would take 31 minutes for either team to get on the scoreboard. With 9 minutes left in the half senior Landon Matz would find senior Matthew Gray for a goal. Six minutes later the two would connect once again for a goal when Matz would find Gray who would dribble through the Yellow Jacket defense. The half would finish with the Devils up 2-0.
Ten minutes into the second half Gray would find Matz for another goal in the game. One minute later the Yellow Jackets would score off a free kick after the Devils would commit a foul. Two minutes later Matz would add a third assist as he would find Freshman Evan Hall for a goal. With six minutes left in the game senior Gavin Rowland would find Gray for a hat trick. The game would end with the Devils taking the 5-1 win. “We did a great job of moving the ball around the turf field. It was just a struggle for us with finishing our shots.” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “Hayesville is definitely a tough team and showed a lot of improvement over the last time we played them.”
On the Defensive side senior Canon Helpman led the way with 17 clears/steals. He was followed by sophomore Max Wilmot and senior Spencer Rowland 7. In goal senior Cameron Phillips recorded 11 goalkeeper saves. The Player of the Game for the Devils was senior Canon Helpman. “Canon did a great job on the defensive line. He did a great job of being the last line of defense in our back line.” said Cline. The Maroon Devils move to 10-1 in conference play. The Devils host Cherokee on Wednesday for Senior Night. Senior Recognition will be at 5:40 followed by the game at 6:00. On Thursday the Devils host Blue Ridge for a Breast Cancer Awareness game at 6:00. The Devil’s only loss of the season was to Blue Ridge earlier in the season.
