Cherryville – The first round of the NCHSAA 1A softball playoffs got underway on Tuesday. Swain entered as the 25th seed in the west and traveled to face the number 8 seed Cherryville. Cherryville scored 8 runs in the 2nd inning to take a commanding lead and eventually take an 12-2 win over the Lady Devils.
On the day the Lady Devils were limited to only 3 hits, but made them count in plating 2 runs. Freshman Kaley Parker was 1-1 with a run scored and a walk. Hannah Shuler opened the hitting for Swain by legging out a bunt single. Parker followed her with a solid single back up the middle. Kiersten Smith would drive Shuler home with the Lady Devils only other hit on the day. Parker would score later in the inning on a Maddie Spates ground ball.
The loss ended the season for the Lady Devils, who finished by winning three of their last four games. Swain finished the season with a 6-13 overall mark, after starting the season 0-8 the Lady Devils finished the second half with a 6-5 mark.
