Lady Devils Blank Cherokee 4-0

May 9, 2022 by Toby Burrell

The Lady Devils hosted the Cherokee Braves on Thursday night for Senior Night. Before the game the six Seniors on the team were honored. The Seniors on the Lady Devils Soccer team this year are Mirian DeLaCruz, Mazie Helpman, Jade Henry, Avery Maples, Jadyn Perez, and Kaylee Simmons. “These Seniors have made a major impact on the soccer team and the soccer program as a whole. Three of them are injured and leave some major holes on our team. They are truly missed out on the field.” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “They will all go on to do great things.” The previous meeting between the Braves and Devils went into overtime with the Devils taking the win.

Twenty minutes into the game Freshman Karena Cline would take a corner kick and Sophomore Anna Gray would receive the ball outside the box and score a goal over the Goalkeepers outreached arms. With eleven minutes left in the half Senior Mazie Helpman would find Freshman Mya Burrows-Kurr with a pass and Burrows-Kurr would dribble past a few defenders and find the corner of the goal. The 1st half would end with the Devils having the 2-0 lead. At halftime the Lady Devils Cross Country team would receive their State Championship rings.

With five minutes left in the game Cline would find Helpman for a goal. Two minutes later Helpman would recover a ball that would bounce off a few Braves defenders and she would convert it into a goal. The game would finish with the Lady Devils taking the 4-0 win. “We played a pretty solid game. It was a very physical game and Cherokee played a very tight defense. It was hard to get through it at times.” said Coach Cline.

Defensively Sophomore Anna Gray led the way with 15 Clears/Steals. She was followed by Freshman Karena Cline with 8, Senior Jade Henry and Freshman Sophie Matz each with 7. In goal Freshman Gracie Sutton recorded 2 goalkeeper saves. The player of the game for the Lady Devils was Freshman Karena Cline. “Karena has really stepped it up in the middle of the field. She not only has been working well offensively, but she also has been a major presence on the defensive side,” said Coach Cline.

The Lady Devils have one more regular season game on Monday at home against Blue Ridge at 6:00. The game will be a Mental Health Awareness Game and also Youth Night. With a win, the Lady Devils will either be Co-Smoky Mountain Conference champions with Highlands or conference champions. Highlands has a game on Monday against Murphy that will help determine things. If both Highlands and Swain win, they will likely play a game to determine playoff seeding on Thursday at a neutral site.
