Cherokee – The Lady Devils ran away with the Smoky Mountain Conference Championship Wednesday. Swain finished with 239 points to second place Murphy’s 119.5. Following behind Swain and Murphy were Robbinsville, Andrews, Hayesville, Cherokee, Tri-County Early College and Hiwassee Dam in that order.
Swain dominated the running events, taking first in six of the eight individual events as well as firsts in the 4×400 meter relay and 4×800 meter relay. Mazie Helpman was first in the 200-meter dash(27.34) and 400-meter dash (1:02.64). Arizona Blankenship took first in the 1600-meter (5:27.93) and 3200-meter (11:43.06). Blankenship finished 2nd in the 800-meter to Amaya Hicks who won it in a time of 2:32.57. Gracie Monteith was second in the 1600 and 3200 with Lily Bjerkness finishing 3rd in both events. Mya Burrows-Kurr finished first in the 300-meter hurdles with Melani Linton finishing 2nd.
The Lady Devils took two more firsts in the field events. Gracie Sutton won the high jump, clearing 4’10. Amelia Rogers, Alden Thomas and Laiken Harvey made it a 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault taking all three of the top spots.
