Swain Takes Win at Hayesville

May 3, 2022 by Toby Burrell

The Lady Devils soccer team traveled to Hayesville on Monday to take on the Yellow Jackets. Just 6 minutes into the game Freshman Mya Burrows-Kurr would find Senior Mazie Helpman with a pass into space and Helpman would finish with her first goal of the night. Five minutes later Helpman would find Freshman Karena Cline for a goal. Five minutes after that Burrows-Kurr would find Cline for her second goal of the game. Six minutes after that Junior Tsini McCoy would find Helpman for another goal. The scoring would be finished for the half with the Lady Devils up 4-0.

In the second half the Lady Devils would get back to scoring with 24 minutes left in the game when Burrows-Kurr would find Helpman for her third goal of the game. One minute later Cline would find Burrows-Kurr for her first goal. The next two goals would have Burrows-Kurr connecting with Helpman. The final goal of the night giving the Lady Devils the Mercy Rule was a pass from Junior Cora Watkins to Senior Mazie Helpman. Helpman would score her sixth goal of the night. The Lady Devils would have what was likely their best passing game of the season. 16 times they were able to string together 3 to 5 passes and their average passing string was 4.2 passes. They were even able to string together seven passes one time. “We played a really good game. It was great to see. We feel like we are now rebounding from the loss a few weeks ago and the team is moving in the right direction.” said Head Coach Scott Cline.

Sophomore Anna Gray led the way with 7 Steals/Clears defensively, followed by Freshman Sophie Matz with 2. In the game, Freshman Gracie Sutton had 3 goalkeeper saves. The Player of the Game for the Lady Devils was Freshman Mya Burrows-Kurr. “Mya did a great job distributing the ball and helping to make great passes that led to goals.” said Coach Cline. The Lady Devils next matchup is today at Murphy High School against Tri-County at 4:30. On Thursday they will host Cherokee for Senior Night at 6:00 for a conference matchup. Senior recognition will be at 5:40.
