Lady Devils Split Doubleheader

May 2, 2022 by Toby Burrell

Tori JohnsonBryson City – Swain hosted a doubleheader this past Friday as the Blue Ridge Sports Academy and the Asheville Trialblazers were both in town.  Both games featured good softball with exciting finishes.  In the opening game BRSA came out on top of a tight contest taking a tight 7-6 win.  In the nightcap the Lady Devils rebounded with a 9-4 win over the Trailblazers.

BRSA scored two runs in the top of the fifth (final inning) to take a 7-5 lead.  Swain rallied with a run in the bottom of the fifth, and left a runner on third with the final out.

Tori Johnson paced Swain by going 2-3 with a double.  Johnson also scored a run and drove in a run.  Kiersten Smith, Haileigh Woodard, Maddie Spates and Faith Woodard all had a hit each.  Haileigh Woodard drove in 2 runs and scored 2.

Kandyce Crisp picked up the loss by working her first complete game.  She scattered 7 hits and had 6 walks to go with 5 strikeouts, while giving up only 3 earned runs.

In the nightcap the Lady Devils broke open a tie game in the bottom of the fourth by scoring 5 runs and taking a 9-4 lead.  Haileigh Woodard and Maddie Spates had 3 hits each.  Woodard finished just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle as she had a single, double and triple.  Spates drove in a pair of runs, as did Faith Woodard.

Hannah Shuler picked up the win in the circle.  Shuler scattered 7 hits and walked none striking out 1.

The win against the Trailblazers avenged a 16-6 loss from earlier in the week for the Lady Devils.
