The Lady Devils soccer team would travel to Cherokee on Tuesday night to take on the Braves in a conference matchup. It would be a night where the game would go into overtime and the Lady Devils would take a total of 37 shots. It would take the Lady Devils 27 minutes to get on the scoreboard. Junior Cora Watkins would make a cross to Senior Mazie Helpman who would finish with a goal. In the second half the Lady Braves would score a goal of their own off a free kick tying the game at 1-1 at the end of regulation.
The first overtime period would be a defensive stand off with neither team scoring a goal. Two minutes into the second overtime period Helpman would find Sophomore Anna Gray for a goal putting the Lady Devils up 2-1. The game would end with the Lady Devils winning 2-1. “It was a hard fought game for both teams.” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “We are still adjusting to missing three key Senior starters and we just struggled with scoring. Cherokee’s keeper did a great job at stopping our shots.”
Defensively Sophomore Anna Gray led the way with 18 Clears/Steals. She was followed by Freshman Sophie Matz with 8, Freshman Mya Burrows-Kurr with 7, and Freshman Karena Cline and Senior Jade Henry each with 6. In goal Freshman Gracie Sutton recorded 7 goalkeeper saves. The player of the game for the Lady Devils was Junior Cora Watkins. “Over the past week Cora has really stepped it up for the team. This is her first year playing high school soccer and she played a great game against Cherokee,” said Coach Cline.
The Lady Devils have two more games this week. On Thursday they travel to Murphy for a key conference matchup at 6:00. On Friday they will host Erwin at 6:00 in a non-conference game.
