East Takes 4-1 Win Over Devils

September 13, 2021 by Toby Burrell

Special to the MDN – The Swain High Men’s Soccer team traveled to Flat Rock on Wednesday to take on the East Henderson Eagles. The Devils would kick off the scoring 20 minutes into the game when Junior Matthew Gray would find Sophomore Owen Craig for a goal. With one minute left in the first half the Eagles would add their first goal of the game. With 23 minutes left in the second half the Eagles would add another goal putting them up 2-1. Four minutes later they would add a 3rd. With 30 seconds left in the game the Eagles would add their final goal putting them up 4-1. “We played strong defense against a very technical team in the first half. We just struggled to make things happen offensively,” said Head Coach Scott Cline.

On Defense Juniors Canon Helpman and Landon Matz led the way with 11 Clears/Steals each. Senior Taligwo Walker had 10, followed by Senior Gavin Lanning with 7 and Freshman Brendan Lanning with 5. In goal Junior Cameron Phillips recorded 20 Goalkeeper Saves. The Player of the Game for the Devils was Cameron Phillips. “Cameron had some phenomenal saves and truly helped keep us in the game,” said Cline.

The Devils host Mountain Heritage on Monday night at 6:00 for a non-conference matchup. It will be the only game the Devils play this week. “We are hoping that this week will give us a chance to get all of our players back before we start conference play next week,” said Cline.
