Highlands (Special to the MDN) – The Lady Devils Soccer Team traveled to the Highlands Highlanders on Thursday night. The Highlanders came into the game undefeated and number 3 in the state. The Lady Devils lost to the Highlanders the first game of the season 4-1. The Lady Devils would get on the scoreboard first when Junior Mazie Helpman would take the ball from a Highlander and dribble down and chip the ball over the Highlander goalkeeper. A few minutes later the Highlanders would add their first goal of the game tying the game 1-1. The half would finish tied 1-1.
In the second half the Highlanders would score their second goal eight minutes into the half. With 20 minutes left in the half the Highlanders would add their third goal of the game off a corner kick. The game would finish with the Highlanders taking the 3-1 win. On defense Senior Kate Poss led the way with 23 Clears/Steals. Freshman Anna Gray was next with 17, followed by Junior Jadyn Perez with 12 and Junior Janet Villagomez and Freshman Emmie Fuller each with 7. In goal Senior Maddie Lay had 20 Saves. The Player of the Game was Junior Mazie Helpman. “Mazie played a great game for the full 80 minutes never letting up.” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “The game was a very physical game and Mazie really stepped it up.”
