Lady Devils Take Down Murphy in a Thriller

April 14, 2021 by Toby Burrell

Murphy (Special to the MDN) – The Lady Devils would play the first 28 minutes of the second half tough all over the field. Murphy would score their first goal with 12 minutes left in the game. Five minutes later Murphy would add their second goal of the game. One minute later the Bulldogs would add a third goal making the score 3-3. With 54 seconds left in the game the Bulldogs would pass the ball back to their goalkeeper causing a handball to happen in the goal box. Simmons would take the indirect free kick. She would deflect the ball off a teammate and take the shot which would bounce off some defenders and roll into the goal giving the Lady Devils the 4-3 win. “Overall we played a solid 68 minutes of soccer all over the field. We just lost the momentum and energy the last 12 minutes of the game.” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “I was really proud of the effort of the girls and how they never gave up. They played until the final whistle of the game. They showed a lot of heart and grit out on the field.”The Lady Devils Soccer Team traveled to Murphy for a game on Monday. The Bulldogs beat the Lady Devils in their first matchup early in the season 4-1. Fifteen minutes into the game the Bulldogs would commit a hand ball right outside the 18-yard box and Junior Kaylee Simmons would convert the kick into a goal over the keeper’s head. Four minutes later Simmons would convert another free kick right outside the box. With 9 minutes left in the first half Freshman JC Parsons would find Junior Mazie Helpman for a goal putting the Lady Devils up 3-0 at half time.

On defense Senior Kate Poss lead the way with 14 Clears/Steals. She was followed by Freshman Anna Gray with 5, Sophomore Elke Reinert and Junior Jade Henry each with 3. In goal, Senior Maddie Lay had 19 Saves. The Player of the Game for the Devils was Junior Kaylee Simmons. “I cannot say enough about the effort that Kaylee showed in this game. She went down with a major injury to her dominant left foot close to the end of the first half and came back out mid way through the second half taped up and ready to play.” said Cline. The next game for the Lady Devils will be Thursday, when they travel to Blue Ridge in a 4:30 start.
