Bryson City – The Maroon Devils closed out their shortened COVID season this past Friday as they hosted Hayesville. It was a close game, as the two teams went to the half tied at 20. But the 2nd half belonged to the Yellow Jackets, as Hayesville scored 21 2nd half points to pull away and take a 41-26 win over the Devils.
For the vast majority of the game the two teams were evenly matched, as the stats for the game were nearly identical. The difference was in the turnovers, as Swain turned it over 5 times. On top of that the Devils were only 1 of 4 in 4th down conversions. All of which combined to give Hayesville great field position, especially in the 2nd half.
In his final game Maroon Devil quarterback Damian Lossiah rushed for 51 yards on 15 carries and scored a rushing touchdown. Through the air Lossiah was 2-3 for 23 yards and a touchdown. Fellow senior Carson Taylor rushed for 32 yards on 7 carries and tossed a touchdown pass of his own. Gabe Lillard finished with a team high 64 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown. Donavan Groenewold rushed for 60 yards on 4 carries and had 3 catches for 50 yards and a touchdown. Cooper Hyatt had 3 catches for 46 yards and a touchdown.
Elijah Watty finished with 13 combined tackles and a sack. Carson Taylor and Brenn Jackson were each in on 10 tackles, Jackson had 2 tackles for loss.
