Bryson City (Special to the MDN) – As the 2021 Swain High Golf season gets underway, there are many obstacles to overcome in order to have a successful season. With one returning starter, the team looks to rebuild this season and compete for a conference championship. The team traveled to Hayesville for this first nine-hole match and played Mountain Harbor Golf Club on Tuesday March 23rd. Junior will Jenkins lead the charge firing a 45. Junior Joe Eagleman shot a 52, junior Landon Nations 57, and junior Carter Kirkland 58.
The second match was at Smoky Mountain Country Club on March 30th. Due to scheduling issues, two high school teams couldn’t make the trip, so Coach Crisp scrambling got some former players he coached to compete against his new team. The best round came courtesy Joe Eagleman who shot a personal best +3 38, leading the young Maroon Devil squad. Will Jenkins shot a 47 and improved on both their scores, Landon Nations shot a 50, and Carter Kirkland a 54. The team finished the day with a total of 189, losing by one shot to Coach Crisp’s makeshift team.
“We are a young team,” states Coach Crisp, “but we have the potential to compete for a conference championship.” The Maroon Devils will compete for the conference in the 1st round on April 22nd at Sky Valley and the 2nd round on April 26th at Old Union.
