Bryson City (Special to the MDN) – The Maroon Devils Men’s Soccer Team hosted the defending conference champion Hayesville Yellow Jackets on Wednesday evening. It would take the Devils twelve minutes to get on the scoreboard. Junior Lucas Trantham would find Sophomore Landon Matz for the first goal of the game. With 13 minutes left in the first half, Junior Gavin Lanning would score an unassisted goal. Just two minutes later Lucas Trantham would add another assist when he found Sophomore Matthew Gray for a goal. Three minutes later Senior Zachary Cline would dribble the ball 40 yards in for a goal. Less than one minute later Cline would find Senior Dhruv Senghani for a goal. Thirty seconds later Senior Chase Burrell would find Gray for his second goal of the game. The half would finish with Swain up 6-0.
Seven minutes into the second half Senior Anthony Reyes would find Matz for his second goal of the game. With seventeen minutes left in the game Gray would assist Burrell for a goal. The Devils would complete the 9-0 mercy rule with eleven minutes left in the half when Freshman Revis Robinson would find Lucas Trantham for a goal. “Overall we played a good game. We had a slow start, but we picked it up after we got about 12 minutes into the game.” said Head Coach Scott Cline.
On defense Senior Booth Bassett and Junior Lucas Trantham led the way with 5 clears/steals each. They were followed by Senior Anthony Reyes with 4 and Junior Levi Trantham with 3. In goal Senior Noel Wolf had 2 Saves and Sophomore Cameron Phillips had 2 Saves. The Player of the Game for the Devils was Junior Lucas Trantham. “Lucas not only played great on the defensive side, he also pushed up and helped on the attack.” said Cline.
