Kernersville – The Lady Devil cross country team traveled to Kernersville last Saturday to compete in the NCHSAA State 1A Cross Country Championships. It was the first state championship competition that Swain has participated in during the COVID season.
It was a successful day for the Lady Devils despite finishing 9th overall as a team, the Lady Devils were the mythical public school state champions as they were the highest finishing public school system. As a matter of fact they were one of only four public schools to qualify for the state championships, along with Lejeune, Camden County and Pamlico County.
Thomas Jefferson won the State Championship followed by Pine Lake Prep, Research Triangle and Grey Stone Day.
Sophomore Gracie Monteith finished off her stellar season with a solid 17th place finish. Monteith finished in a time of 21:20.51.
