Special to the Maroon Devils Network – The Swain High Golf Team started their 2020 campaign with their first match last week on Wednesday (3/4) at Smoky Mountain Country Club. Despite the wet conditions, the young Maroon Devils took first place in their 9 hole match with a team total of 200. Leading the team was Junior Ashton Buchanan firing a 44. Sophomore Joe Eagleman finished with a 49, Senior Isaac Baker a 51, and Freshman Landon Nations rounded out the top four scores with a 56. Also competing was Freshman Braylon Aldridge with a 66. They defeated Murphy, Blue Ridge, and Rosman. On Tuesday the 10th, the team traveled to Connestee Falls in Brevard to compete in 9 holes against Rosman and Highlands. Improving on their scores from last week were Isaac Baker 42 (+6), Ashton Buchanan 43 (+7), and Joe Eagleman 48 (+12). Finishing in the top four was Landon Nations with 60 (+24). Also competing was Freshman Taylor Ball 68 (+32). The team finished three shots ahead of Highlands (team total: 196) and Rosman (team total: 267) with a team total of 193 to take first place. “We are constantly improving on our individual golf games,” stated Coach Crisp, “that will ultimately help our team be the most successful. I am proud of the progress that we are making.”
